5) Review key vocabulary terms and figurative language. (5 Min)
Cult - Followers that show blind devotion to a person, idea, ideology, object, movement, or work. Examples of cult behavior: Conformity to the group is demanded; the cult leader or leaders brainwash members; rituals may be performed; followers are sometimes threatened if they attempt to leave; followers must show full devotion or sometimes face punishment or be put to shame; followers are made to feel guilty if they do not conform. Sometimes there is physical abuse by leaders to followers.
Blindly Following (verb) or Blind Follower (noun) - to join and follow the commands of a leader, group, or other organization, and doing as you are told without questioning their actions or motives, even if the actions are wrong or harm you or someone else. This is figurative language. One is not actually physically blind. It means their thinking is blind.
Ideology - the body of doctrine or belief that guides an individual, social movement, institution, class, or large group. An ideology can be positive or negative depending on the view. You can have religious ideologies, political ideologies, personal ideologies, and so forth.
Brainwashed - forcing one to give up their basic personal, social, religious, or political beliefs and attitudes and conform to contrasting/differing ideas. This is usually done by various forms of manipulation (tricking someone into doing or believing what you want), threats, violence, and other means of force or compulsion. This is figurative language. One’s brain is not really being washed. But one’s thoughts or views are being forgotten in order to take on the thoughts being forced on to them.
“Drinking the Kool-Aid” - This is an idiom or common expression. This phrase came about from the Jonestown Massacre because many people drank the poisonous juice after having blindly followed Jones. Some of course forced to drink this. But since then, this phrase refers to someone who is blindly following a group or cause without really thinking or researching the truth. One might say, “He’s just drinking the Kool-Aid.” It basically means you are not thinking for yourself and simply believing what you hear.
Conformity (noun) or Conforming (verb) - joining people in the same societal standards, beliefs, attitudes, or character; be in agreement or accordance. Conformity can be both positive at times and negative at times depending on what one is conforming to.
6) In-Class Discussion Questions- verbally, if possible, or in Zoom chat. (5 Minutes) When can conformity be a good thing? When does conformity turn into a bad thing? Give a supporting example in your verbal or written response in class.
