Due: Informative Essay Thesis Outline (in Google Class)
FOCUS QUESTIONS:
- Am I clear on what the directions are asking me to do under Your Assignment in the Performance Task Part 2?
- Do I understand the difference between an Informative Essay vs. a Persuasive Essay or vs. a Narrative?
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Go to HMH. Go to your Dashboard. Select Writeable. Launch Writeable.
- Click on the assignment: 6th Grade Informative Performance Task Part 2.
- We will review the directions together. We read these sources yesterday. We will briefly discuss what we read to refresh our memory.
- We will discuss the difference between an informative essay, a persuasive essay, and a narrative. You do not have to remember all this today, but before testing in May, you must know the difference between these.
- Go to Google class. You will open up the document: Informative Essay Thesis Outline.
- You will construct a thesis (main topic) sentence for your informative essay based on the instructions from the Writeable Informative Performance Task Part 2.
- Remember, your thesis statement will be one sentence but include the 3 main topics that your essay will focus on.
- Ask me out loud or in Zoom to check your Thesis once you think you have it ready to go.
- We will decide on one person’s thesis sentence to work off of. So you will eventually change yours as we are going to be constructing this entire essay together. I will simply be guiding you through the process over the next two weeks.

I will call on students randomly to state out loud what they would have written at each step along the way. We will go through our topic, supporting details, and text evidence. But we will then write together once we agree on the correct response.
- You will type out the complete paragraph as we go along together, so you are very clear on what is expected of you for these paragraph response questions.

- We will develop our Introduction Paragraph together.
- Let’s briefly review the components of an Introduction Paragraph at this LINK. You can also find this in my ELA Resource folder under Resources.
- We will construct an Introduction Paragraph together based on the Main Topic (Thesis) sentence we created yesterday.
- I want everyone to take about 5-7 minutes to try to develop an interesting hook. This should be around 3-5 sentences. We will use the student’s hook that I choose. You will all type this hook into Writeable. This is how your essay will begin.
- Go ahead and type the Main Topic/Thesis from yesterday after the hook.
- But we need a transition sentence now in between the Hook and the Thesis. Try to develop a transition sentence or two. I will choose a student’s transition sentence. We will then type this in together after our Hook and before our Thesis.
*Remember, we are all going to build the same essay by the end of this just so you can see how an essay is to be developed. You can use this to study how an Informative Essay is written before the state test. By the end of today, we should all have the same Introduction Paragraph with an interesting hook, transition sentence, and thesis sentence.
